Less than 20% of Thais eat enough vegetables, study says

Officials from the Thai Health Promotion Foundation (THPF) are invoking Bangkokians to eat their veggies.

A report, recently published by the THPF, has revealed that only 17.7% of Thais eat their doctor-recommended proportion of daily vegetables. This nutritional dearth apparently results in some 400,000 deaths per year, thanks to nutrition-related ailments such as heart disease and diabetes.

The Bangkok Post reports that in addition to Thai nationals’ slim consumption of vegetables, the vegetables that they are consuming leave something to be desired.

The THPF’s report found that 40% of fruits and vegetables being consumed within Thailand contained dangerous levels of chemical residue.

In an effort to combat this phenomenon, the Public Health Ministry has moved to create markets that will deal only high-quality produce.
