Lee Chestnutt freed to leave Thailand

After a three-year legal dispute with his ex-landlord that had him confined to the Kingdom seemingly indefinitely, British national Lee Chestnutt is finally being allowed to leave Thailand.

The announcement came via the BBC, which is reporting that Chestnutt has been awarded his travel documents, and can now leave Thailand.

Chestnutt’s fate remained doubtful as recently as last month, when the landlord with whom Chestnutt had entered into a dispute appealed a court decision allowing Chestnutt to leave the country.

That appeal has apparently failed, as Chestnutt is now free to go.

The dispute between Chestnutt and his landlord began in 2009, when he and a business partner, Jaffery Maharan, rented a house in Bangkok’s Chatuchak district. When they moved out of that residence, their landlord insisted that they had caused extreme damage to the house, and sued.

In the ensuing legal fracas, Chestnutt and Maharan were forbidden from leaving the country, and from obtaining work visas in Thailand.

No word has arisen yet about whether or not Maharan will also be allowed to leave.
