Khlong Bang Sue is last defense for inner Bangkok

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration is feverishly trying to protect central Bangkok by draining floodwaters through Khlong Bang Sue.

Floodwaters streaming down Phahonyothin, Ratchadaphisek, and Vibhavadi Rangsit roads have so far successfully been contained by the canal. For Coconuts Bangkok photos showing the status of the floods yesterday Nov. 8 on Ratchada click here, for Phahonyothin on Nov. 5 click here.

The BMA is working 17 water pumps at full capacity on Khlong Bang Sue, according to the Bangkok Post, but overflow has reached sewers in nearby areas. If the waters pass Bang Sue they will flow through Saphan Kwai to Victory Monument.

Seri Supparathit, director of Rangsit University’s climate change and disaster center, said that in seven days floodwater would most likely reach Victory Monument and Ratchathewi.
