The hotel that caught fire early yesterday morning causing the death of a French tourist in Bangkok’s Khao San area was reportedly illegally operated.
Police Capt. Charnchai Changwang said that the top floor of the building that burned was occupied by an illegal guesthouse that was not registered with authorities or subject to safety checks, according to the AP.
Police said that the fire started in a bar on the ground floor of the hotel. Five tourists escaped but the 27-year-old Frenchman, identified only as Charlie, was found burned to death.
