Last night, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe reiterated his country’s commitment to economic projects in Thailand and throughout the ASEAN region.
In a joint press conference with Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, Abe laid out his plans to continue support for the Dawei economic zone in Myanmar, the construction of high-speed railways throughout the region and the undertaking of large-scale water management projects in Thailand.
Yingluck in turn encouraged further Japanese investment in the Kingdom, particularly in the aviation, automotive and energy industries.
Abe’s stopover in Thailand constitutes the second leg of a three-nation tour of Japan’s principle ASEAN trading partners. Prior to landing in the Kingdom, Abe made a stopover in Vietnam and tomorrow morning he leaves for a brief trip to Indonesia.
According to the Bangkok Post, Japan is the single largest source of foreign direct investment in Thailand. Japanese investments provide 63%, or THB312 billion, worth of Thailand’s total FDI.
