Iranian crystal meth smugglers sentenced to life in prison

An Iranian couple has been sentenced to life in prison by a Bangkok court for smuggling crystal methamphetamine into Thailand in a secret luggage pocket.

Mr. Alireza Resai and Ms. Sara Faramarzi, both 26 years old, were caught at Suvarnabhumi Airport on June 22, 2011 with four packages of ice totaling 2.87kg, The Daily News reported. The police had received a tip from an informant that the smugglers would be entering Thailand on an Etihad flight from Abu Dhabi. They were waiting for them at the baggage conveyor belt and requested to search their luggage, finding the drugs in a secret compartment.

Airport police turned the case over to the Narcotics Suppression Bureau and Reszei and Faramarzi were charged on July 28, 2011. The couple confessed that they had been hired by an Iranian man to send the luggage with drugs to a Malaysian man in Kuala Lumpur.

The court on Ratchadaphisek Road found the defendants guilty of carrying the drug under a provision of the Narcotics Act which normally warrants death.

Because the suspects confessed, they were spared execution and sentenced to life in prison on Feb. 16, 2012.
