Illegal bookmakers taking bets on governor’s election

Jirayu Huangsap, a Pheu Thai MP, complained to parliament on Tuesday that illegal bookmakers in Bangkok’s Khlong Sam Wa district were taking bets on the outcome of March 3’s gubernatorial election.

Metropolitan Police Bureau chief Khamronwit Thoopkrachang said that he would arrest offending bookies if they could be found, but that this would be difficult, seeing as most bets take place in private groups.

According to the Bangkok Post, a spread bet on the election is the most popular option for political-minded gamblers. The common spread bet speculates that the winning gubernatorial candidate will receive between 850,000 and one million votes. Bookies will pay out 90% if the winning candidate receives votes in that range.
