The days of relying on snail’s paced non-3G service or paying THB150 for WiFi at Starbucks to make that mobile upload are over, folks.
That’s because the Information and Communication Technology Ministry (ICT) has announced that it is setting up free public WiFi at 20,000 hotspots around greater Bangkok.
If you’re doubtful about this, so are we.
Still, ICT Minister Anudith Nakornthap said that they are currently introducing 20,000 hotspots in Bangkok and that 20,000 more will be set up around Thailand by October, the Bangkok Post reported. Average speed will be 2 Mbps, he said.
The initiative is part of the four-year, THB30 billion Smart Thailand project that’s kicking off now. The project aims to provide high-speed internet, both wired and wireless, to 80 percent of Thailand’s districts.
If the Bangkok Post is correct, it sounds like some of the hotspots should be up and running already. Has anyone used one? Report back to us at info [at] coconutsbangkok.com
