Bangkok police can only shake their heads at the in-your-face attitude of motorcycle gang members who continue to stage illegal street races in the city’s main thoroughfares.
On Saturday, motorcycle gang members reportedly closed off a portion of a road in the area of the Don Muang Air Force Base between 2:30am and 3:00am. An estimated 300 to 400 motorcycle riders blocked off three inbound express lanes of Phahonyothin Road in the Don Muang district. This rendered the thoroughfare impassable to all vehicles coming from the Rangsit area.
The gang members initially converged in front of two petrol stations before proceeding with the blockade. After the street race was over, the gang members boldly made a U-turn in front of the air force base before driving back to Pathum Thani. The gang members had no fear whatsoever and blatantly rode past the four police stations in the area.
According to reports, these motorcycle gang members tap into the police communication line with the use two-way radios. They also field pick up trucks and cars in the area before staging the street races to check if there are any police or patrol cars set up to arrest them. They are said to converge between midnight and 3am during weekends and public holidays.
When asked for comment, Pathum Thani Deputy Chief Pol Col Surasak Khunnarong was quoted as saying that he has yet to receive an incident report about the street racing. The police official however, promised to probe into the matter, the Bangkok Post reported.
