Hotel occupancy up for Songkran, thanks to political stability

Despite a strengthening baht, Bangkok’s hoteliers are reporting record levels of occupancy for this year’s Songkran holiday.

Surapong Techaruvichit, president of the Thai Hotels Association, said that hotel occupancy in the Kingdom is predicted to increase to as high as 75 to 80% this year, a double-digit improvement over last year’s 62% occupancy rate.

With damage from flooding having been largely overcome, and the political situation enjoying a present period of stability, Thailand is once more drawing a wide range of international tourists.

The Nation reports that one side effect of this trend is a dearth of skilled hospitality industry workers. According to the THA, programs will be put in place to rapidly train workers for labor in the hospitality industry.
