Harsh penalties introduced for cab drivers who repeatedly reject passengers

Count this as another victory in the perpetual war against Bangkok’s lackluster transportation infrastructure: the Transport Department is about to start revoking the licenses of cab drivers who repeatedly pass up fares.

According to a statement from Land Transport Department Director General Somchai Siriwatanachoke (which was subsequently reported by MCOT), the Department instituted a policy in September according to which cab drivers who reject passengers are fined to the tune of THB1,000 per rejection. This policy, however, has not had its intended effect. Many passengers still complain of being passed over by cabs, so many that this type of complaint comprises 60% of all the objections fielded by the Department.

In response to this epidemic, the Department is going to start revoking the licenses of repeat offenders.

Offending cabbies will be identified both by setting up CCTV cameras to monitor violators, and by soliciting complaints from irate passengers.

Those wishing to register a complaint against a cab driver can do so by calling 1584.
