Traffic around much of Bangkok came to a standstill yesterday and several key bus and train stations were rammed, as hundreds of thousands of people traveled home for the New Year holidays.
Traffic around Moh Chit Bus Station in northern Bangkok was particularly bad.
Deputy Transport Minister Prasert Chantararuangthong said that 24 more train trips were added to the schedule yesterday to accommodate extra passengers.
Prasert estimated that roughly 100,000 people left Bangkok by train yesterday, while bus service provider Transport Co Ltd estimated that 200,000 left by coach.
During such busy periods, ticket profiteering rears its ugly head and Prasert urged any people who were overcharged for transport to call hotline numbers 1584 and 1490.
“Selling an overpriced bus ticket is punishable by a fine of up toBt10,000,” he said, according to the Nation.
