Deal site Groupon has finally launched in Thailand after much speculation.
Currently the complete website is up and running but there are no deals up. The site boasts that “The World’s Greatest Web Phenomenon is coming to Bangkok!” and indeed it looks like Bangkok is the only city where deals will be offered at first.
There’s also a travel deals option though, on which they are running a full on-on giveaway: an all-expenses paid weekend for two in Hong Kong worth HK$10,000. So sign up now!
The Groupon Thailand site fully demonstrates the company’s quirky (annoying?) writing style covered in awell-known New York Times story:
Highlights: Wine? Laughter? Head massage? Count me in!
Fine Print: We promise that we won’t give you so much wine that you actually fall asleep. But if you fall asleep during the massage, all bets are off.
We’re not sure if that’s funny, but if Groupon is offering a heavily discounted trifecta of wine AND laughter AND a head massage, we’re all for it.
In fact, the company is promising discounts of up to 90% so it could be something to consider.
“We are very excited to expand the benefits of Groupon to customers and merchants in Thailand. Groupon allows Thai consumers to experience a wide range of amazing offers and experiences they won’t find anywhere else,” Groupon Thailand CEO Damian Kemner said in a press release.
The Next Web’s Jon Russell speculated that Groupon may team up with Thailand’s biggest website Sanook as a local partner for the launch, as Sanook already works with Tencent, Groupon’s local partner in China.
Regardless, Groupon will face an uphill climb in Thailand as homegrown brand Ensogo already controls a 90% market share.
