Bangkok-based tech reporter Jon Russell has broken the news of Groupon’s potential expansion to Thailandon his blog at The NextWeb.
Looks like the Chicago daily deal behemoth is eyeing Thailand’s 67 million population, as it’s posted a call to fill 10 Bangkok senior management positions on LinkedIn. Efforts by Russell to confirm the expansion from the horse’s mouth were stonewalled by Groupon.
Groupon is already in Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines, and Indonesia but it will be fighting an uphill battle in Thailand. Ensogo, started less than two years ago, has skyrocketed to huge popularity in Thailand and was recently bought by one of Groupon’s biggest rivals in the US, LivingSocial, for a sum rumored to be in the tens of millions.
