Several African green mamba snakes have escaped a building in the flooded areas of Nonthaburi’s Pak Kret district, the Nation has reported.
Officials said that a total of 15 green mambas are on the loose – 13 one-meter long juveniles and two two-meter long adults.
The bite of the green mamba is extremely venomous, with a high mortality rate among bitten humans.
The Zoo and Wildlife Veterinary Society of Thailand has set up a hotline at 1362 for anyone who sees one of the mambas. Snake spotters can also call the Jor Sor 100 radio station at 02711 9160.
Chisanu Tiyacharoensri, vice president of the Wild Animal Rescue Foundation of Thailand, said that people should stay as far way from the snakes as possible as there is no anti-venom for the mamba in Thailand currently.
A bite from the a mamba can potentially kill a human in 20 minutes, Chisanu said. If bitten, clean the wound with soap and water and apply tourniquets at 7cm and 14 cm above the bite, he said, then get to the hospital as quickly as possible. Do not squeeze or cut the wound, he added
