Govt comes through on ‘one child, one tablet’ promise

The Government has kept its promise of giving students tablet computers after a trial run earlier this month.

The “smart classroom” project gave four schools the chance to try tablet computers with various operating systems: Na Luang school in Thung Kru used the Windows 8 operating system, Prachaniwet School used Android, Ritthiyawannalai School used Windows 7 and Wat Pathumwararam School used iPads.

A ceremony presided over by education Minister Suchart Thada-Thamrongvech and Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Minister Anudith Nakornthap was held Wednesday to deliver first batch – 55,000 units – to Prathom 1 students, the Bangkok Post reported.

The computers will be handed out to students in eight provinces throughout Thailand: Krabi, Bangkok, Kanchanaburi, Kalasin, Khamphaeng Phet, Khon Kaen, Chanthaburi and Chachoengsao following Thai alphabetical order.

The students who will receive the tablets will be able to take them home, if parents and teachers allow them. The children will have ownership of the tablets after three years,” Mr Suchart said of the 800,000 students set to benefit from the scheme.
