Transport Minister Chadchart Sittipunt has proposed a change to the free bus and train services offered to Thai citizens.
In a statement reported by the National News Bureau of Thailand, Chadchart suggested doing away with free bus and train services in favor of a voucher system that would allow low-income travelers – specifically senior citizens and students – to ride at a reduced rate.
The free bus and train system was originally set up for the purpose of lowering Thai citizens’ costs of living.
While committed to reforming the current transportation scheme, Chadchart also said that the current system would remain in place for at least another six months while detail of the shift are ironed out.
