GLBT rights group the Network of Sexual Identity is protesting Suankularb Wittayalai School’s policy of not allowing students of the “third sex” to do their teaching apprenticeships there.
The Bangkok all-boy’s school is the oldest public secondary learning institution in the country and its alumni include prime ministers, Supreme Court justices, and Fortune 500 CEOs.
“It’s sexual discrimination. Sexual discrimination is a violation of the consitution,” said Network of Sexual Identity coordinator Natee Teerarotchanapong last week. He then headed to the Central Administrative Court to file a complaint, The Nation reported.
The school’s director Cherdsak Suppasopon defended their decision, saying, “We want to prevent other students from imitating some behavior.” Cherdsak said he was not against people of the third sex but that school could not admit them because they were for boys only. “When I led a co-ed school, members of the third sex were welcome as teaching apprentices,” he added.
Suankularb Wittayalai School posted an apology on the internet after online criticism from third sexers.
“Suankularb Wittayalai should create gentle people, not gentle men,” Natee said.
