Red Shirt leader Arisman Ponguenggrong, who fled Thailand during the 2010 protests, turned himself into the the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) headquarters in Bangkok yesterday Dec. 7.
Arisman faces several charges including terrorism for his role in violence between security forces and Red Shirt protesters in 2010 and the disruption of the ASEAN summit in Pattaya in 2009. He also faces charges for leading protesters to storm parliament this year and a raid at the Thaicom satellite station in Pathum Thani, MCOT reported.
Arisman allegedly turned himself in at Pattaya court on Tuesday and then to the DSI yesterday, where Red Shirts gathered in support for him. He is preparing THB1.2 million for bail.
“The reason I’ve surrendered myself to authorities is because I think the judicial process in Thailand is now just and I would like to fight the case in court and deny all charges,” Arisman said before surrenduring, according tothe Bangkok Post.
Arisman was thought to have been hiding out in Cambodia ever since he fled the Red Shirt rallies at Rajaprasong intersection in 2010 when the army began to retake the area.
Earlier during the protests he famously escaped from arrest by rappelling down the side of a Red Shirt-occupied building in Bangkok.
