A 27-year-old Frenchman died in a fire early this morning at a budget hotel in the Khao San Road area.
The hotel’s owner, Nampong Pengboon, said that the victim went by the name Charlie and had been making a living selling homemade shoes in the area, The Nation reported. Nampong said he had a Thai girlfriend.
The man’s body was burned beyond recognition so police are awaiting autopsy results to identify the man. Police said the fire started at Happy Bar in the ground floor of the hotel at around 1:30am, sending guests fleeing.
Firefighters had a hard time putting the blaze out because the hotel is in a narrow alley that fire engines couldn’t enter. They had to drag the hoses onto an adjacent roof to spray the blaze at the three-story hotel.
