Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra visited deluged communities in Nonthaburi yesterday, as floodwaters moved down the Chao Phraya river towards Bangkok.
High water levels are expected to reach the capital today, but so so far no flooding in Bangkok has been reported. Still, the Bangkok Metropolitan Authority has mobilized staff and resources for the potential evacuation of 27 communities if needed, the Bangkok Post reported.
Seven central provinces are currently battling floodwaters – Uthai Thani, Chai Nat, Sing Buri, Angthong, Ayutthaya, Pathum Thani and Nonthaburi – and about 1.4 million people in Thailand have been affected by the flooding, according to the Nation.
At least 112 people have been killed by the flooding and at least two are still missing. MCOT has reported that a father and his two daughters, aged 11 and nine, drowned in Chai Nat Province earlier this morning when their boat capsized in the strong currents of the overflowing Thajeen River.
Unfortunately, the precipitation doesn’t look to be abating any time soon. The Thai Meteorological Department issued an advisory today warning of a monsoon trough moving across North and Northeast Thailand that should produce torrential rain. The trough is expected to hit central Thailand and lower Isaan sometime Tuesday Sep. 20 to Friday Sep. 23.
