Five killed in crash after late night chase

A youth brawl and shooting led to a car chase and double crash that left five people dead early this morning Jan. 20 in Bangkok’s Rat Burana district.

Police were alerted to the accident at 5am and rushed to the scene, where they found a crushed pick-up truck and car, the Bangkok Post reported.

New Krongthong, 20, who was in the truck, said that a a group of nine friends and him had gotten into an altercation with another group on Rama II Road because someone glared at them. New said that the other group then followed him and his friend in their car. Stopped at a red light, someone from the other car fired at the truck. Police reported two bullet holes in the truck and found two 9mm bullets in the vehicle.

The chase continued when the light turned green – the car kept following the truck and firing at it, according to New. But things ended tragically when the truck hit a tree on Suk Sawat Road. Five people were thrown from the truck – three died instantly and two died later at the hospital. All fatalities were between 18 and 23 years old.

New said he and his friends that survived the crash saw five or six men – two of them armed – getting out of the car after the crash.

Police will question people involved in the accident further.
