Filipino activists press for elephant’s relocation to Thailand

If Filipino activist group Philipinas Ecowarriors gets its way, Mali, the Manila Zoo’s only elephant, will soon have a new home.

The group has been pushing for Mali to be relocated to Thailand, where she would be kept in a nature preserve, rather than in a zoo.

Interaksyon reported that several of Ecowarriors’ leaders have pointed to Chiang Mai’s Thai Elephant Conservation Center as a worthy home for the elephant, who was gifted to the dictator Ferdinand Marcos 35 years ago by Sri Lanka.

The Thai government has yet to comment on the feasibility of a move and activists are currently researching Thailand’s quarantine policies to see if transporting Mali to the Kingdom would be a practicable solution.
