FBI: ‘Thailand is the most likely target in Asia for a terrorist attack’

The United States’ Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has released a list of the world’s most likely targets for terrorist attacks, a list on which Thailand ranks unnervingly high.

In addition to being the number-one target for terrorist attacks in Asia, Thailand is also the number-five target for terrorist attacks in the world.

The FBI explained, in a meeting with Department of Special Investigations (DSI) chief Tarit Pengdith, that Thailand had earned its remarkably high ranking thanks to its openness when compared with other countries in the region. Both Thailand’s economic development and looser-than-usual immigration restrictions have made it easy for terrorists to move within the country’s borders.

In response to the FBI warning, Tarit has proposed that the DSI create a new command center to deal with the terrorist threat.

The Bangkok Post reports that FBI officials also asked for help tracking down American fugitive Jason Derek Brown, who has been wanted since 2004 on murder charges relating to the robbery of an armored car. The FBI believes that Brown may be hiding out in Thailand.
