Expressway project might be scrapped in favor of light rail line

The Stage 3 N1 expressway, which has recently drawn criticism for a design that would see it running through part of Kasetsart University’s campus, may be scrapped in favor of a light rail line.

A proposal to forego the embattled expressway project in favor of a “Yellow Line” rail system was brought forth by Pheu Thai Party gubernatorial candidate Pongsapat Pongcharoen, in a conversation with Transport Minister Chadchat Sittipunt.

The Transport Minister mentioned that the expressway project might not be feasible at present, seeing as it was designed more than 20 years ago.

The Bangkok Post reports that were the expressway to be swapped out in favor of a rail line, that rail line’s construction would under the auspices of the Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA).

No decision has been made as of yet and Chula Sukmanop, director of the Office of Transport and Traffic Policy and Planning (OTTP) says that there is plenty of time left to consider the proposal.
