Explosion at big bags injures six in Sai Mai

Six people were injured when an explosive was thrown into a crowd of people trying to fix hole in the big bag wall in Bangkok’s Sai Mai district last night Nov. 17.

The device – a brick attached to gunpowder according to police – was thrown into a group of about 100 people who were working to close a 70-meter gap in the floodwall at Khlong Hok Wa, the Bangkok Post reported. The gap in the flood barrier was created in the morning by about 300 angry Pathum Thani locals and caused floodwater to rise rapidly in Sai Mai district from 20cm to between 30cm and 40cm.

The Khlong How Wa big bag barrier is one of the main obstacles preventing floodwater from flowing into northern Bangkok, but in doing so it has left Pathum Thani inundated for weeks. This dilemma – saving Bangkok at the expense of the provinces – has been an ongoing issue throughout the floods and is examined further here.
