Experts warn Bangkokians to prepare for ‘volatile’ weather conditions

In a statement from the National News Bureau of Thailand with an unnervingly apocalyptic bent, Bangkok’s top weather scientists have warned the city’s residents to brace against “volatile” weather conditions, which they speculate will increase throughout the coming decade.

Scientists from the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) announced on Wednesday that Bangkok’s plight is liable to become much was during the next 10 years. As global warming pushes sea levels upwards and increases the amount of yearly rainfall, Bangkok is proving increasingly vulnerable to flooding and general damage to its water table.

Rising oceans have already placed much of the city below the mean sea level.

Tawida Kamolvej, Deputy Dean of Political Science Faculty at Thammasat University, said that the city’s current infrastructure threatens to exacerbate these problems. A lack of preventative architecture and a populace generally unaware of their high level of risk threaten to make the looming catastrophes even worse.
