Expecting More Rainfall, Bangkok’s Eastern Canals Drained

Bangkok is bracing itself for the projected heavy downpours over the next few days. To prevent massive flooding, authorities are draining water from the city’s eastern canals and pumping them out to the Bangpakong River and the Gulf of Thailand.

Irrigation Department senior official Surat Thanusilp explained that Bangkok’s eastern canals are holding the northern run-off of about 16 million cubic meters per day and rainfall of 300-400 millimeters per hour in the area.

He noted that their department has coordinated with the BMA to speed up water drainage from the current 10 million up to 23 million cubic meters day per day.

The official cited that some 900,000 cubic meters of water have been moved from the canals and into the Prakhanong pump water station, MCOT reported.

According to Surat, the continued downpours could cause water to rise in canal-side areas situated outside the flood prevention dike, reports said.
