Don Muang Airport re-opens with Nok Air flights

Bangkok’s Don Mueang International Airport re-opened today March 6 with the first Nok Air flights running at 6am this morning.

The airport was damaged in last year’s flooding and has been closed for four months. It is now fully repaired and ready for operation though, with the runways, taxi ways, aircraft parking space, the electrical system, the passenger building and shops in good condition.

Acting transport permanent secretary Mr. Silpachai Charukasemrattana dismissed any concerns about hygiene problems caused by the dirty water that inundated the airport for months, the Bangkok Post reported.

He said that all buildings have been fumigated and foul smells are gone.

Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra inspected Don Mueang Airport recently and said that her government sees that airport as equally important to Suvarnabhumi, MCOT reported. She said that the airport’s re-opening will “drive the country’s economic and cultural development.”

Low-cost carrier Orient Thai so far has not confirmed whether it will also resume flights from Don Mueang.

However, private jet company MJets’ managing director Jaiyavat Navaraj said that private flights will resume from Don Mueang.
