Deputy police chief Pongsapat denies being Pheu Thai pick for Bangkok governor race

Deputy national police chief Pongsapat Pongcharoen has denied being contacted by the governing Pheu Thai party about running for governor of Bangkok.

Elections will take place Feb. 17 and some have speculated that Pol Gen Pongsapat would be picked to run after current governor Sukhumbhand Paribatra’s term expires Jan. 10.

Pongsapat denied being approached by Pheu Thai and said that even if he was approached, he’d have to “think very carefully about running,” the Bangkok Post reported.

Pheu Thai Party spokesman Prompong Nopparit also denied rumors about the party having their eyes on either Pol Gen Pongsapat or Sudarat Keyuraphan as their candidates in the election.

“Three people have showed their intention to contest the election under the Pheu Thai banner. Their names will be submitted to the party’s executive board,” Mr Prompong said, without providing the candidates’ names.
