Department of Traffic developing mobile app

The Department of Traffic and Transportation is launching a new smartphone application that will provide real-time traffic updates n collaboration with the Intelligent Traffic Information Center (iTIC).

It’s not the first government agency to develop a traffic app – the Royal Thai Police launched their “Traffic Police” app in March on the Apple App Store and Android Market.

The department’s deputy director Nikom Porntharakcharoen said the new application, expected to be launched by the end of August, aims to relay traffic images captured by the capital’s 150 CCTVs installed on major streets to Bangkok commuters.

The images from CCTVs had previously been used in conjunction with the Intelligent Traffic Signs and with the department’s website.

Mr Nikom said with the launch of the new app, members of the public can easily access accurate and up-to-date traffic updates without browsing through websites.

The free app is expected to initially feature real-time still images of traffic reports which are updated on a minute-by-minute basis. The department is also planning to incorporate live motion feeds into the app in the near future.
