According to statistics from Thailand’s Labor Protection and Welfare Department, 3,400 people have lost their jobs over the past six months, thanks to an increase in Thailand’s minimum wage to a rate of THB300 per day.
The wage increase took effect six months ago in seven of Thailand’s industrialized provinces and was instituted nationwide on Jan. 1.
In a statement yesterday, Labour Minister Phadermchai Sasomsap said that only 275 people have lost their jobs since the New Year.
Neither in Phadermchai’s announcement nor in the Nation’s coverage of the figures is any explanation offered as to where these numbers are coming from. Just sayin’.
