Thailand’s Democrat Party today officially nominated incumbent Bangkok Governor Sukhumbhand Patibatra as its candidate in the February gubernatorial election.
Matichon reported that the party’s executives unanimously agreed upon the decision with high hopes that Sukhumbhand would defeat other candidates.
To secure his nomination, Sukhumbhand met with the party’s nine-member selection panel, chaired by Banyat Bantadtan, to present his vision statement on Dec. 18. He had been chosen since he proved more competent than the other three applicants including Prakob Jurakitti, Apichai Techa-ubon and former Deputy PM Korbsak Sabhavasu.
Last week, some in politics speculated incorrectly that the governor would not be chosen to represent the Democrat Party in the February.
Sukhumbhand’s term will end on Jan. 10, 2013.
