Czech Republic’s ambassador to Thailand Milan Sedláček will be tried in his home country for abuse of office related to a conference scam that cost the Czech foreign ministry about USD81,000.
Sedláček, formerly the Czech foreign ministry’s general secretary, is accused of billing the ministry for a series of conferences in Singapore, China and Hong Kong that never happened, news website Czech Position reported.
He is scheduled to appear before a court in Prague on April 5 and could face a prison sentence of two to 10 years if convicted.
A memorandum of cooperation between the Czech special police anti-corruption unit and Thai counterparts was signed recently, referring to the embassy investigation.
“The Kingdom of Thailand is one of the destinations where in the past people convicted or subject to criminal proceedings in the Czech Republic have hidden,” the police said in a statement.
