Crackdown coming for fake ID cards

Today the Department of Special Investigations (DSI) and the Interior Ministry announced that they would join forces to help crackdown on a rash of fake Thai ID cards that are being peddled to migrant workers.

Representatives from both bureaus portrayed the fake IDs as essential to Thailand’s drug kingpins and described the project as a move against the country’s drug gangs.

The Nation reports that some fake ID cards can run as high as THB180,00. Typically, the fake IDs are procured via a middleman who bribes officials to print the fake cards on the behalf of migrants.

The DSI reported that the first act of its anti-corruption campaign would be to review more than 100,000 documents related to the procurement of IDs in an effort to weed out the officials involved.
