Court issues suspended jail term for protestors who trespassed on parliament in 2007

On Thursday, the Criminal Court offered a suspended sentence to Jon Ungphakon and nine other protestors who had trespassed on the parliament building’s grounds in 2007.

The incident in question took place on Dec. 12 of that year and involved Jon and his nine companions scaling the fence surrounding Thailand’s parliament building, then sitting down on its grounds as an act of willful defiance.

The group was protesting political actions undertaken by the coup-installed National Legislative Assembly (NLA), which was then trying to institute legislation involving security, land and natural resource management.

For their actions, the Criminal Court fined Jon and five of his fellows THB9,000 and gave them prison sentences of one year and four months. However, these prison sentences were suspended for two years and the fine was then reduced to THB6,000.

The Bangkok Post reports that four other protestors involved in the incident received a similar fate, having been given one-year prison sentences which were then suspended and THB9,000 fines that were later reduced to THB6,000.
