Further information has surfaced regarding yesterday’s premature opening of the BTS’s doors, which threw riders into a flurry of (seemingly well justified) doubts as to the Skytrain’s safety.
According to a statement from Bangkok Mass Rapid Transit System director Anat Arbhabhirama, as reported by the Bangkok Post, the BTS’s computerized control room lost its connection to the train thanks to a “malfunction.” The train’s conductor then took manual control of the vehicle, pulling to a stop and opening the doors well short of the platform.
By the time it left Siam station, the train had reestablished its connection with the central network and the rest of its trip proceeded without incident.
As of the time of this writing, none of these events had served to inspire much confidence in the BTS.
