Bangkok’s Dusit Zoo currently has two rare Coconuts Crabs on display for the public until Dec. 10.
It’s hard to fully express how delighted this makes us at Coconuts Bangkok.
The Coconut Crab (Birgus latro) is the world’s largest anthropod living on land and is mostly found in forests on Australia’s Christmas Island. They’re also found in the Similan Islands National Park in Thailand.
The crabs are known as “robber crabs” or “palm thieves” for their propensity to climb palm trees, crack open coconuts, and eat them. They are unable to swim like other crabs because they breath with a lung.
The crabs can reach 40cm in length and up to 4kg in weight. The biggest coconut crab on record weighed 17kg and lived over 60 years (see photo below), according to MCOT.
Coconuts crabs are endangered unfortunately due to habitat loss and human predation. So check ’em out while you can at the zoo!
