Residents of Phanom district in Surat Thani have taken construction of a local police station into their own hands after a contractor abandoned the project more than two years ago.
The Bangkok Post reports that for the past three weeks, 10 to 20 residents per day have shown up to help complete work on the half-built station, some even commuting in from neighboring villages to take part in the project.
Originally, PCC Development and Construction Co. had undertaken the THB6.2 billion project, but construction on the station came to a standstill after workers walked off from the site, complaining of missing back pay.
The station in Phanom is only one of 396 such stations across the country that remain unfinished thanks to contract disputes.
The chief of Phanom police station, Pol Col Wijit Polsong, said that in addition to providing a much-needed space for the police, the construction project has become a welcome source of pride for Phanom residents.
