Chulalongkorn braces for Uthenthawai protest

Students and alumni from Rajamangala University of Technology Tawan-ok’s Uthenthawai campus will protest tomorrow in the Siam Square area against a plan by Chulalongkorn University to reclaim the land where their campus is located.

Chulalongkorn, arguably Thailand’s most prestigious university, said that all activities will function as normal but advised students and staff to avoid Phaya Thai Road from 9am until the protest ends.

Uthenthawai students have a reputation for brawling with other technical schools, especially Pathumwan Institute of Technology.

Uthenthawai deputy rector Suebpong Muangchoo said he didn’t foresee any violence: “I’m not worried that Uthenthawai students will create trouble because their intention is to seek justice, not to stage a war. What I’m concerned about is a third party intervening and stirring up the situation.”

The Metropolitan Police Bureau will have 400 officers on hand to monitor the rally.

The protest will start at 11am at Chulalongkorn where students plan to lay a wreath to protest the reclamation, the Bangkok Post reported.
