The Thai government is initiating a crackdown on guns throughout the country.
Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yubumrung said yesterday that he has instructed officials across Thailand to aggressively get firearms off the streets after the previous administration gave out permits to gun shops to liberally, NNT reported.
Mr. Chalerm stated that the thorough and serious sweep of weapons will continue even though he has received threats from those who have been affected by this new policy.
A sweep through Bangkok ending on Tuesday led to the arrest of 586 suspects and seizure of 234 guns. Police also tested an X-ray van to scan cars for contraband recently, but were unable to catch any suspects because they publicly announced the checkpoint.
