Burma quake rattles Bangkok skyscrapers

A 6.8-magnitude quake jolted Burma at 8:12am yesterday morning, rattling highrises in Bangkok.

The quake’s epicenter in Burma was 442km away from Mae Hong Son’s Pang Mapha district and the North of Thailand felt its effects as well.

Two aftershocks followed the main event – a 5.9 magnitude at 8:30am and a 6.1-magnitude at 5:54pm.

No structural damage was reported in Bangkok, but many residents of highrise towers made emergency calls saying their buildings were shaking. The quake was felt along Ratchadaphisek Road and Khlong Toey areas of Bangkok, the Nation reported.

Prof Thanawat Jaruphongsakul, a seismologist at Chulalongkorn University, said Thailand was not at major risk from quakes because there are not many major fault-lines in the country.
