The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is installing platform edge doors at nine major stations of the BTS Skytrain in Bangkok in a bid to reduce the risk of accidents.
Bangkok Governor MR Sukhumbhand Paribatra revealed that the City Hall’s commercial arm, Bangkok Mass Transit System Public Company Limited (BTSC), is investing 600 million baht in setting up 1.5-meter high screen doors at some of the capital’s busiest BTS stations.
MR Sukhumbhand said the total number of BTS passengers is now estimated at 700,000 per day, creating massive congestion around the exits and entrances of train compartments.
The new platform edge doors, he added, are being introduced to prevent waiting passengers from falling off the platform onto the train track.
The automated half-height doors have already been installed at Siam Station, with more to be built at 8 other stations which include Asok, Phaya Thai, Sala Daeng, Phrom Phong and On Nut. The BMA plans to install the edge doors at all stations in the near future.
