Yingluck Shinawatra’s government is looking to stop the contract Bangkok Mass Transit System Company (BTSC) signed with the Democrat-run Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) to operate the BTS Skytrain for the next 30 years.
The Pheu Thai Party will petition the Administrative Court to try and stop the deal. Deputy Pheu Thai spokesman Jirayu Huangsap confirmed the party had appointed Transport Minister Jarupong Ruangsuwan to lead a panel to look for irregularities to present to the court according to The Bangkok Post
Mr Huangsap asked some probing questions of the BMA.
”Why have you granted the concession in such a rush and who will benefit from the contract – the people, the firm or someone else?” he enquired.
The deal in question is worth THB190 million to BTSC and BMA is expected to make THB110 billion from the contract. Questions have been asked as to why the BMA did not wait until the current Bangkok Governor’s term ends later this year and why were no other companies allowed to bid.
BMA is preparing a press conference to outline how Bangkokians will benefit from the deal.
