300 officers conducted a cell search at Klongprem Prison this morning, Oct. 6, looking for contraband like cell phones and narcotics.
The search began at Division 5 at, where 1,300 prisoners who committed the most serious crimes are housed,TAN reported. Division 5 yielded a high number of cell phones, narcotics, and drug paraphernalia.
Officers from the Corrections Department, Crime Suppression Division, and “commando units” took part in the operation.
Klongprem commanding officer Prasert Yoosuparb said the searches are a way to suppress drug smuggling in the prison, adding that the officers are closely watching 15 prisoners who have been linked to drug trafficking.
Prasert said that he is looking into setting up cellphone jammers at the prison.
Prisoners at Klongprem have been banned from receiving goods from relatives since the beginning of this year, as its a common way to smuggle in contraband.
