Crowds flocked to Bangkok’s Chinatown to celebrate the first day of the Chinese New Year yesterday Jan 23.
Her Majesty Queen Sirikit and Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn presided over the opening ceremony at Wat Traimitr and throngs of well wishers lined the streets to cheer their arrival.
Chinese New Year is one of the most important occasions of the year for Thais, many who are ethnically Chinese. It is a time to pay homage to ancestors and seek blessings of happiness and prosperity for the new year.
Yesterday marked the beginning of the Year of the Dragon, which is considered to be the luckiest in the Chinese zodiac. Consequently, a baby boom is expected this year amongst Chinese people around the world.
Those born in the Year of the Dragon are said to be dominant and ambitious and usually successful. They’re passionate and enthusiastic but can end up feeling unfulfilled. They’re also known for their fiery tempers.
