The Department of National Park, Wildlife and Plant Conservation will now inspect pet shops in Chatuchak Market looking for trading of illegal wildlife.
The department has set up on office at the park to facilitate the daily inspections, the NNT reported. Several complaints about the sale of protected species like flying squirrels, woodpeckers, and slow lorises prompted the move, department chief Damrong Pidej said.
Those who buy prohibited animals will be subject to jail time of up to three years and/or a THB30,000 fine.
Protected species like the slow loris are allegedly sold at Chatuchak Market.
