Bangkok U. corruption poll: Abhisit the cleanest politician, Chalerm the worst

A Bangkok University poll found that 90 percent of Bangkok residents think there is a severe corruption problem in Thailand.

The poll surveyed 1,000 adult residents of the capital and was done in honor of International Anti-Corruption Day, which is today Dec. 8.

In terms of specific politicians, respondents found former prime minister and opposition leader Abhisit Vejjajiva to have the cleanest image at 32 percent, TANN reported. Current Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra was the second cleanest at 27 percent and former prime minister and and chief advisor of the Democrat Party Chuan Leekpai was third at 22 percent.

The poll found the politician with the least honest image to be Chalerm Yoobumrung of Pheu Thai, followed by the Democrat’s Suthep Thaugsuban, and then Bhum Jai Thai’s Supoj Saplom. (Burglars found piles of cash in Supoj’s home last month, you’ll remember, leading to a corruption investigation.)

69 percent of the people polled believed that something must be done about the problem. Only 9.6 percent said that they thought the corruption problem wasn’t serious. 24 percent said that they would not take any action to deal with corruption and 7 percent said they have no problem with corruption.

When asked about who should be held responsible for dealing with corruption, 53 percent said national politicians, 48 percent said the government, 44 percent said local politicians, and 40 percent said civil servants.

Regarding Prime Minister Yingluck, 69 percent said they had little or no confidence in her government’s ability to fight corruption while 30 percent said they had total confidence in her government.
