Bangkok taxi drivers are seeking an approval from Thailand’s Transport Ministry for higher fares in the face of rising fuel and living costs.
Taxi drives are proposing that fares remain the same price of THB35 for rides under one kilometer, but to increase the price per kilometer after by eight to 15 percent.
Witoon Naewpanich, a leader of the taxi cooperative, said that they will also ask the ministry to reduce the number of taxis on the roads, The Nation reported.
Currently there are about 75,000 taxis in the country, but he said they should be reduced to 50,000 to 60,000.
Lately in Bangkok it has become infuriatingly difficult to actually find a taxi that will take you to where you want to go, partly because taxi drivers are being squeezed by inflation and higher fuel costs.
Let’s hope that the proposed fare increase makes the average taxi on the streets of Bangkok more willing to take us to our desired destinations!
