Bangkok taxi driver with heart of gold returns jewels

Bangkok taxi drivers have a bad reputation, but there’s at least one in the City of Angels with a heart of gold.

Indeed, Saksri Kesseekaew has earned worldwide media attention for returning 8.2 kilograms of gold worth more than THB13 million to a passenger who accidentally left it in his cab.

Now he’s got some around his neck too, as the owner rewarded him with two gold necklaces and THB500,000 cash.

Saksri, 56 years old and from Roi Et, told police he became extremely worried when he found a bag full of jewelry in his taxi last Wednesday March 14, The Bangkok Post reported. He called his friend and asked him to phone the Police Radio FM 91 to put out the word about the lost jewels, and drove back to the area where he picked up and dropped off the passenger hoping to find him.

Mr. Saksri found out about the owner, Ubon Ratchathani golder dealer Akekarat Kanokwannakorn, from a relative who saw a story about him on TV.

The two met for the handover at the Police Radio FM 91 station.

Mr Akekarat said he had brought the gold to Bangkok to change its marking and forgot it in the taxi.

Photos of Saksri giving the gold back to Akekarat are on the Post website.
